London Yarns will be hosting a Mystery Knit-A-Long (MKAL) starting early March 2017!

London Yarns is pleased to be offering another Mystery Knit-a-Long
Suitable for ALL Knitters, from Beginner through to Experienced,
With pricing in tiers to fit varying budgets
Please join us in the fun!

Starting early March 2017, every Monday, for approx. 6 weeks, you will be given a new clue with knitting instructions to help you complete the project.  As to what the final project is that you are knitting – well, this is the ‘mystery’ part!

This time around, we are offering two categories of MKAL – “Standard/Beginner” & “Challenging/Experienced”.  The Standard MKAL is suitable for ALL knitters (including beginners that are familiar with the knit stitch, purl stitch & ready to learn some pattern reading).  The Challenging MKAL is for those of you that want to broaden, hone, or advance your knitting skills to some degree and are open to learning something new.

To receive these Clues you can drop into the shop to pick up them up each week or we can email them out to you – whichever you prefer.  Upon completion, you will receive a finalized pattern.

Jen, our MKAL moderator, will be posting updates on Ravelry and she, as well as the rest of the staff, will be available to assist you through any questions or knitting help – further details to follow.

We will begin taking registrations for the London Yarns Mystery KAL starting tomorrow, Tuesday, February 21st.  You can register in person or by phone at 519-474-0403.  The cost will be your choice, depending on which MKAL Yarn Option Package you choose to work with and after registering, you will receive a list of requirements (i.e. yarn, needles, etc) so that you can be ready to begin when you receive your first clue.

We hope you can join us; these KAL’s are a lot of FUN!!

So, in summary here’s what we need YOU to do:
  1. Decide you want to play along with us & join our MKAL!
  2. Choose either the “STANDARD MKAL” or the “CHALLENING MKAL” or BOTH!!
  3. Choose one of the 3 MKAL Yarn Option Packages.
  4. From your choice of Yarn, choose your colourway(s).
  5. Let us know if you want to receive your clues by email or if you will pick up a printed copy in person at the store.  (We will need you to confirm your email address with us, if you choose that option.)
  6. Come in or call in to register with a) your payment information, b) choice of Standard or Challenging MKAL, c) choice of yarn & d) choice of colour.

We are starting our Saturday Building Blocks Afghan Group again.  We meet twice a month starting on March 11th at 1:30 pm.  We will work on two blocks each session.  This is a ‘no stress’ way of learning to read a pattern & try out different knitting techniques.  A total of twelve different blocks make a comfy throw with an optional border.

Would you like to improve your hand knitting skills and have a gorgeous sampler afghan to show for it?  Louise will help you on your way with this new educational class.  Each month we will work on two different blocks while focusing on expanding our knitting knowledge.  Start with the simple knit & purl stitch squares and then watch your confidence grow as you master the techniques of each square with advancing difficulty.  We will be covering skills such as pattern reading, pattern abbreviations, gauge, pattern appropriate increase & decrease techniques, lifelines, lace work, cable knitting, reading charts and, of course, methods of casting on & off.  By June we will be ready to finish an afghan that is approximately 36” x 48” and decide on your favourite border option.

Sock knitting has dominated the knitting world for the past several years and will continue to do so for many years to come.  Don’t be afraid to dive into your first pair of socks!  We will guide you through every step of the way from casting on and knitting the leg, completing your heel flap, turning the heel, knitting the foot and grafting the toe.  Soon you will be turning heels and tapering toes like a pro!  Warning:  Knitting socks is highly contagious!  Once you start, you can’t stop.  You simply can’t just make one! (pair, that is).

‘Mentoring”’ ... Not just for UFO’s anymore!!  Now you can take a Mentoring Session (or two or three) to expand your knitting skills.  If there has every been a class that we’ve offered, but didn’t work with your schedule, or one of our original Dragonpine Design Patterns that has caught your eye, but you didn’t know if you could manage it on your own ... now is the time to take advantage of our Mentoring & Skill Building Sessions!  We highly encourage you to start something new, take on a new project and expand your knitting skills while under the helpful guidance of our experienced & patient teachers – Janet & Cathy.

The beauty of these sessions is that YOU CHOOSE which dates you would like to come, either the Wednesday dates or the Friday dates or you can mix and match.  YOU DO NOT NEED TO COME TO EVERY SESSION OFFERED.  Simply come to the ones you need to!  All we ask is that you call the store to register to let us know when you will be coming.  The only pre-requisite is that we need a working copy of your pattern BEFORE the session so we may familiarize ourselves with what you are tackling.  Simply bring the pattern into the store and we will make a working copy for both of us.

COST:  If you are coming to a single session or are coming “hit and miss” as you need us, the price will be $25.00 per session

THIS CLASS IS PERFECT FOR
ALL BEGINNER KNITTERS
Lately we have had loads of requests to do a workshop on fixing mistakes. Well here it is! This hands-on class will not only teach you how to deal with all kinds of “knitting disasters” like dropped and twisted stitches and un-picking one or many rows, but will also deal with things like; “how do I know what row of my pattern I’m on” and “Oh-No! All of the stitches fell off of my needle! What do I do? And “Oh-No! The phone rang, I set down my knitting and now I don’t know how to start up again! So often customers tell us that they unravelled all of their knitting and started over simply because they didn’t have the skills to fix their mistake; Oh My! Never again after this workshop! Simply put, all beginner knitters can benefit from taking this class.

PROVISIONAL CAST-ON
(The perfect start for the perfect ending!)
One 2.5-hour Session
Cost:  $35
Date & Time:  Saturday, April 8/17 from 10:00 am – 12:30 pm
Teacher: Janet

It seems that of late many knitting patterns are asking you to begin with a “Provisional Cast-On”.  Some patterns offer it as a suggestion or option, but what is it?  I’m glad you asked!  A Provisional Cast-On is a method of casting on where the stitches that you start with are left “live” so that you can collect them later.  This method of cast-on comes in very handy and useful for many knitted projects including scarves, cowls, hems, afghan blocks or strips as well as neckline openings.  Use it any time in knitting where it would be nice to “finish where you started” without the bulk of having to sew the 2 pieces together.  Please join Janet to learn and practice this invaluable knitting technique.  Although there are many ways to achieve the Provisional Cast-On, we are going to learn the Crochet Cast-On method in this workshop.  You do not need to know how to Crochet to take this class.  By casting on with this method, you can later collect the live stitches to join your work.  This lends itself very nicely when Grafting/Kitchener Stitch or a 3 Needle Cast-Off/Bind-Off is used to join the knitting together.  It is also a beautiful way to join a hem, either plain or picot, with no sewing and no worrying about lining up your stitches.  The cast-on that we learn is also useful even if you don’t use it provisionally. The resulting edge looks exactly the same as when we cast-off in hand knitting so one edge of your knitting will look the same as the other!  Perfect for scarves and dishcloths and many other knitted items.

Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit & Purl Stitches

We are pleased to re-introduce our “Knit-It-With-Jan-et” series of workshops.  Please join us for the first workshop (with more to come) in this series.  This is going to be F-U-N, fun!

Session 3:  Thursday, April 27/17 from 10:00 pm – 11:00 am

Please join Janet and knit this fabulous little scarf/shawlette.  This project is a perfect introduction to lace knitting for those of you beginner knitters who have never tried knitting lace before.  Even experienced knitters will enjoy this workshop where we create a beautiful fingering weight triangular scarf.  The completed project can be worn year ‘round due to its lightweight nature.  Participants can expect to learn many techniques such as “yarn over/yarn forward” (YO/YFWD), “knitting through the back loop” (TBL), and decreases such as “knit 2 together” (K2TOG) and “slip, slip, knit” (SSK).  We will also learn how to work with stitch markers, work back and forth on a circular needle, read a pattern, and the all important technique of blocking the finished piece.
