‘TASTERS PACK’, BUTTONS & CLASSES

Monday, February 13, 2017 – ‘Tasters Pack’, Buttons & Classes
Please Note:  The Store will be closed for Family Day next Monday, February 20th.

Greetings to you, on this Monday morning!  We have a few treats in store for you that may brighten your day and excite you to pop into the store this week!!  New Buttons, new yarns, a new class schedule & a surprise reveal at the end of this email.  Happy reading ...

New Shipment of Buttons!!

We are very thrilled to be carrying Cara’s beautiful handiwork and Cara has just delivered a large shipment of BRAND NEW Buttons!!  We have LOTS of choices, sizes & shapes for you to use on your projects.

“There Was A Tree” Buttons
by Local Artisan, Cara Howard
of Mount Brydges, Ontario

There Was A Tree is a local company that creates hand-crafted wooden buttons and coasters. All pieces created by There Was A Tree are made from locally sourced materials; having an Arborist for a husband and a family owned & operated tree removal company, facilitates access to a variety of local woods, harvested in a safe & responsible manner.  Each HANDMADE, solid wood button is selected for the beauty of its grain and shape, are kiln dried, making them washing machine safe and come in a variety of species and sizes, such as chestnut, cedar, ironwood, aspen, apple, cherry, pear, maple, spalted maple & locust.  The buttons range in sizes from ½” to 2 ½” & are finished using mineral oil.

As for the name, There Was A Tree, the name came naturally to the owner.  As a teacher, it is not only the beginning of her favourite children's book (The Giving Tree) but stories about meeting her husband start with the same line.

You can complete another square on your Bingo Cards
by using There Was a Tree Buttons on a project!!

Here is an example of the kinds of buttons currently available in our shop from There Was a Tree:

All cards are priced the same, regardless of size, style or quantity per card.

Cara also makes FABULOUS wood coasters!!  These coasters are also kiln dried to be water resistant, measure 4-inchs in diameter, have felt pads on the underside & are sold in sets of 2.  Again, here is a sampling of what we may have available in the shop...

INTRODUCING ...

Zen Yarn Garden, Inc. is based in Ontario, Canada and run by full time husband and wife team, Roxanne and Neville Yeun. They take pride in providing the most luxurious fibres available for their yarns and dyeing them in a range of beautiful semi-solid and one-of-a-kind colourways.

Zen Yarn Garden yarn is special!  They know that every hank you buy is destined to have many hours in your stash and on your needles before it becomes a garment or accessory item that you will wear proudly. London Yarns is proud to begin carrying Zen Yarn Garden Yarns!!

We have received our first ‘Tasters Pack’, if you will, in four different ‘brands’ of Zen Garden Yarns and in wide assortment of colourways.  Here are a few stats of the yarns we currently have in stock (please note that the following pictures are to show the TYPE of yarn; the colours that we have in stock will differ from those shown):

‘Crisp, squishy, lovely’, that well describes Serenity 20 from Zen Yarn Garden.  Serenity 20 is made of ultra soft, superwash merino with a generous 20% of luxurious, ultrafine cashmere.  The addition of just 10% nylon gives it strength and fluidity, and of course, makes it the perfect sock yarn.  Dyed in rich, deep colourways with a gentle sheen and a very subtle halo.   Treat yourself to a decadently soft and velvety smooth shawl made from one hank of Serenity 20!

Stunning colours! Zen Yarn Garden Serenity Silk + is a magnificent blend of particularly soft superwash merino, lavish cashmere and the silk adds both strength & a subtle sheen, adding to the magnificently saturated, hand-dyed colors that you have to see to believe!  Serenity Silk Plus has crisp stitch definition, yet creates a fabric with excellent drape and is a dream to work with. Each skein offers a generous 500 yards that enables many ‘one skein projects’!

We are starting our Saturday Building Blocks Afghan Group again.  We meet twice a month starting on March 11th at 1:30 pm.  We will work on two blocks each session.  This is a ‘no stress’ way of learning to read a pattern & try out different knitting techniques.  A total of twelve different blocks make a comfy throw with an optional border.

Would you like to improve your hand knitting skills and have a gorgeous sampler afghan to show for it?  Louise will help you on your way with this new educational class.  Each month we will work on two different blocks while focusing on expanding our knitting knowledge.  Start with the simple knit & purl stitch squares and then watch your confidence grow as you master the techniques of each square with advancing difficulty.  We will be covering skills such as pattern reading, pattern abbreviations, gauge, pattern appropriate increase & decrease techniques, lifelines, lace work, cable knitting, reading charts and, of course, methods of casting on & off.  By June we will be ready to finish an afghan that is approximately 36” x 48” and decide on your favourite border option.

Sock knitting has dominated the knitting world for the past several years and will continue to do so for many years to come.  Don’t be afraid to dive into your first pair of socks!  We will guide you through every step of the way from casting on and knitting the leg, completing your heel flap, turning the heel, knitting the foot and grafting the toe.  Soon you will be turning heels and tapering toes like a pro!  Warning:  Knitting socks is highly contagious!  Once you start, you can’t stop.  You simply can’t just make one! (pair, that is).

‘Mentoring”’ ... Not just for UFO’s anymore!!  Now you can take a Mentoring Session (or two or three) to expand your knitting skills.  If there has every been a class that we’ve offered, but didn’t work with your schedule, or one of our original Dragonpine Design Patterns that has caught your eye, but you didn’t know if you could manage it on your own ... now is the time to take advantage of our Mentoring & Skill Building Sessions!  We highly encourage you to start something new, take on a new project and expand your knitting skills while under the helpful guidance of our experienced & patient teachers – Janet & Cathy.

The beauty of these sessions is that YOU CHOOSE which dates you would like to come, either the Wednesday dates or the Friday dates or you can mix and match.  YOU DO NOT NEED TO COME TO EVERY SESSION OFFERED.  Simply come to the ones you need to!  All we ask is that you call the store to register to let us know when you will be coming.  The only pre-requisite is that we need a working copy of your pattern BEFORE the session so we may familiarize ourselves with what you are tackling.  Simply bring the pattern into the store and we will make a working copy for both of us.

COST:  If you are coming to a single session or are coming “hit and miss” as you need us, the price will be $25.00 per session.  SAVE by buying 4 sessions when you register for $100.00 and get the 5th session free!

THIS CLASS IS PERFECT FOR
ALL BEGINNER KNITTERS
Lately we have had loads of requests to do a workshop on fixing mistakes. Well here it is! This hands-on class will not only teach you how to deal with all kinds of “knitting disasters” like dropped and twisted stitches and un-picking one or many rows, but will also deal with things like; “how do I know what row of my pattern I’m on” and “Oh-No! All of the stitches fell off of my needle! What do I do? And “Oh-No! The phone rang, I set down my knitting and now I don’t know how to start up again! So often customers tell us that they unravelled all of their knitting and started over simply because they didn’t have the skills to fix their mistake; Oh My! Never again after this workshop! Simply put, all beginner knitters can benefit from taking this class.

TOE UP SOCKS
Three Sessions of varying lengths
Cost:  $85 (includes yarn & pattern)
Dates & Times:
Session 1:   Saturday, March 18/17 from 10:00 am – 11:30 am
Session 2:   Saturday, March 25/17 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Session 3:   Saturday, April 1/17 from 10:00 am – 11:00 am
Teacher:  Louise
With sock knitting being all the rage, let’s experiment with different ways of knitting them.  Toe up socks are easy to do, and if you think about it, make a whole lot of sense.  By knitting your socks from the toe up, you can be guaranteed a perfect fit because you can try them on as you go AND , more importantly, if you are running shy on yarn, you are guaranteed of getting at least both of your feet knit – no more different coloured toes!  Basically your yarn supply will determine whether you are making ankle socks or knee socks!  The great thing about this workshop, other than knitting socks, of course, is that you will learn a wonderful new cast-on, a new way to turn a heel, and a neat new way to cast-off; and, you guessed it… you don’t need to graft the toes when you are finished!
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite: Knowledge of Knit and Purl Stitches; Beneficial to have worked on double pointed or 2 circulars

Do you remember this comment from our January 30th email?

“For all you Crocheters out there, here is an awesome looking Cowl Pattern, offered free of charge by Moogly & crocheted with just one ball of Scarfie.  It’s appropriately called “Squish”, as it looks so soft & ‘squishy’.  I’m not an avid Crocheter, but I just might give this one a go myself!!”

Well ....  SURPRISE!!  Look what came off my crochet hook this week:

My “SQUISH”

I dusted off my crochet hook and all it took was just one ball of Scarfie, a 9mm hook and just a couple of hours “work” (as mentioned – I’m not an ardent Crocheter, so it would probably go even faster for you skilled Crocheters out there) and ‘Tah-Dah’ – a Squish Cowl, ready to wear!

Thank you Tamara Kelly for sharing this easy, fun pattern!
Here is the pattern link:  http://www.mooglyblog.com/squish/

Enjoy!!
